Approximately mid-2012. The airport was rendered obsolete and officially closed upon the inauguration of the new Damghan Airport (ICAO: OIMD) in June 2012.
The airport was closed because it was replaced by a new, larger, and more modern facility. The old airfield (IR-0179) was a small, rudimentary strip with an unpaved runway, located very close to urban expansion. It was inadequate for modern commercial or transport aircraft and could not be expanded. The new airport was constructed further from the city to support regional economic development and accommodate larger aircraft safely.
The airport no longer exists. The land has been completely redeveloped and absorbed into the urban fabric of Damghan. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows that the area is now a dense residential and commercial district with streets, houses, and public buildings. The former runway and any associated structures have been entirely removed.
IR-0179 was a small, local airfield primarily used for general aviation. Its operations were limited to light aircraft, agricultural flights (such as crop dusting), and possibly minor government or liaison flights. It was not a commercial airport and did not handle scheduled passenger services. Its main historical significance is as the original air access point for Damghan before the region's infrastructure was developed to support a modern airport.
Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening this airport. The site has been permanently repurposed for urban development, and a new, fully operational airport (Damghan Airport, OIMD) now serves the city and surrounding region.
