Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately late 2011. The closure is evidenced by local news reports from October 2011, which state that the Wexford Model Flying Club had to relocate because the airfield was closing after being their base for 15 years.

Reason for Closure

The airport was a private airstrip, and its closure was due to the owner's decision to retire from flying. The land was subsequently reverted to its primary agricultural use. The closure was not due to economic failure of a commercial operation, military conversion, or a specific accident.

Current Status

The site has been fully reverted to agricultural use and is now part of the surrounding farmland. Satellite imagery shows the faint outline of the former grass runway (oriented roughly 10/28) is still visible, but it is unmaintained and used for grazing or cultivation. The buildings that may have served as hangars appear to be used as typical farm sheds for storage.

Historical Significance

Castlebridge Airport was a private, unlicensed grass airstrip that served as an important local hub for the general aviation community in County Wexford. It primarily handled private light aircraft, microlights, and recreational flying. Its most notable role was serving as the long-term home base for the Wexford Model Flying Club. It was a classic example of a farm strip that supported a vibrant local flying culture but never handled commercial or scheduled passenger flights.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans, proposals, or prospects for reopening Castlebridge Airport. Given that it was a private strip on private land that has since been fully repurposed for agriculture, its revival is considered extremely unlikely.

WEXFORD IS NOT IN CO.WESTMEATH... IT IS IN FACT IN CO.WEXFORD BELIEVE IT OR NOT!

THIS LISTING IS TOTALLY INCORRECT... AIRFIELD DOES NOT EXIST Posted by on August 13, 2016

Castlebridge is located on the Northern outskirts of Wexford town and did at one time have an airstrip on a farm. The strip has reverted back to pastureland many years ago. The location indicated on the map is not an airfield but is in fact the centre of Wexford town! DW Aug 2016
