Garowe Airport (IATA: GGR, ICAO: HCMW), officially known as General Mohamed Abshir Airport, serves as the primary air gateway to Garowe, the administrative capital of the Puntland State of Somalia. It plays a crucial role in connecting the region's political and commercial center with the rest of Somalia and key international hubs, facilitating travel for government officials, NGO staff, business people, and the Somali diaspora. The airport is a vital piece of infrastructure for the development and stability of northeastern Somalia.

Originally a simple gravel airstrip, the facility underwent a significant transformation and was officially inaugurated as a modern international airport in early 2018. This major upgrade, funded by international partners, included the construction of a paved 2.4-kilometer runway, a new terminal building, and modern navigational aids. This development marked a milestone for the region, enabling larger aircraft to land safely and boosting its connectivity and economic potential. The airport is named in honor of the first commander of the Somali Police Force.

Located approximately 12 kilometers from Garowe's city center, the airport is accessible via a paved road. Travelers typically reach the facility by local taxi or pre-arranged private transport, a journey that takes around 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic. Operations at Garowe Airport consist of both domestic and limited international flights. Major domestic routes connect Garowe with cities like Mogadishu, Bosaso, and Galkayo. Ethiopian Airlines provides a key international link with a regular service to Addis Ababa, connecting passengers to its extensive global network. Other airlines operating domestic services include Daallo Airlines and Jubba Airways.

The airport features a single, modern terminal building designed to handle its passenger flow efficiently. Inside, facilities are functional and include check-in counters, a departures hall with seating, security screening areas, and a basic baggage claim. There are no expansive lounges, duty-free shops, or a wide variety of restaurants; however, a small snack bar or cafe is typically available for refreshments. For those traveling from Garowe, it is advisable to arrive at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours for an international departure to allow sufficient time for check-in and security procedures. It is recommended to pre-arrange transport from the airport into the city or to negotiate the taxi fare before starting the journey.
