Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2016-2017. While an exact date is not officially recorded, pilot forums and historical satellite imagery confirm the airstrip ceased operations around this time. Imagery from mid-2016 shows a maintained runway, while imagery from 2018 shows it becoming overgrown and used for agriculture.

Reason for Closure

The airstrip was a private facility, often referred to as a 'farm strip'. It is widely understood within the local aviation community that the airstrip closed following the death of its owner and operator. Without the owner's active management, aviation activities ceased, and the land was fully returned to its primary agricultural purpose.

Current Status

The site has fully reverted to agricultural land. The former 550-meter grass runway is no longer maintained and has been integrated into the surrounding fields. Current satellite imagery shows the area is used for farming, likely grazing or silage production. While the faint, straight outline of the former runway is still discernible from the air, it is completely unusable for any aviation purposes.

Historical Significance

Loughbrickland Airstrip was a private grass runway used for recreational general aviation. It had no commercial or military role. Its significance was local, serving as a base and landing spot for the owner and other private pilots with light aircraft (such as Cessnas, Pipers, and microlights) operating under Visual Flight Rules (VFR). It was a typical example of the many private, informal airfields that support the UK's general aviation community.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans, proposals, or prospects for reopening the Loughbrickland Airstrip. As the land is privately owned and now in full agricultural use, any reopening would be entirely dependent on the current landowner's initiative, which is considered highly unlikely. The airstrip is permanently closed.

It's a field Posted by on January 27, 2017

I wouldn't want to land here as it is a field, not an air strip
