Circa mid-to-late 2000s. The exact date is not officially recorded, but aviation records and pilot forums indicate it ceased being actively used around this period. It was still listed as operational in the early 2000s but was considered closed by 2010.
The closure was not due to a single major event like an accident or military action. As a small, private airstrip, its closure was most likely due to a combination of factors including: a change in land ownership, the owner ceasing flying activities, and increasing land value for other purposes. The airstrip was located adjacent to the growing Bartley Wood Business Park and near expanding residential areas of Hook, making the land more valuable for agricultural or potential future development than for private aviation.
The site of the former airstrip has reverted to agricultural use and is now part of the surrounding farmland of Griffin's Farm. Satellite imagery shows the faint outline of the former ENE-WSW runway is still visible in the field, but all associated aviation infrastructure, such as hangars or markers, has been removed. The land is located directly south of the M3 motorway and the Bartley Wood Business Park.
Hook Airstrip, also known as Griffin's Farm airstrip, held local significance as a private general aviation facility. It was not a military or commercial airport. Its primary function was to serve as a base for the private recreational flying of its owner(s). The facility consisted of a single grass runway (approximately 550 meters long, designated 08/26) and minimal infrastructure, likely a small hangar or shelter for the aircraft. Operations were limited to light, single-engine aircraft, with a Piper PA-28 Cherokee known to have been based there. The ICAO designator 'GB-0430' is an unofficial code used in some databases to identify small UK airfields that do not have an official ICAO code (which for the UK would start with 'EG').
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Hook Airstrip. Given the high land value in the area, its proximity to major transport links (M3 motorway), and the expansion of nearby commercial and residential zones, the site is far more likely to be considered for future development or continued agricultural use than for a return to aviation. Reopening is considered extremely unlikely.
