RAF Barton Bendish

The airfield was closed due to military demobilization following the end of World War I. As a temporary Home Defence landing ground, its purpose became redundant with the cessation of hostilities and the elimination of the threat from German airship and bomber raids.

RAF Barton Bendish was a First World War Home Defence Landing Ground. Opened in 1916, it served as a satellite airfield for No. 51 Squadron, which was headquartered at nearby RAF Marham. Its primary mission was to defend the British Midlands and London against attacks by German Zeppelins and, later, Gotha bombers. The squadron operated aircraft such as the Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2c and B.E.12 from this grass airfield. The site is historically significant as it represents a key component of the UK's nascent air defence network, which was rapidly established to counter the new threat of strategic aerial bombardment during WWI. The ICAO code 'GB-0111' is a non-official identifier, likely assigned by flight simulator communities or unofficial databases, as the airfield was closed long before the modern ICAO system was fully implemented.

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening RAF Barton Bendish as an airfield. Given that it has been private agricultural land for over a century and lacks any aviation infrastructure, its reopening is considered highly improbable.
