Approximately 2016-2017
The airfield was closed after the land was sold for a major residential housing development. The site was identified as a key part of the 'New Eastern Villages' (NEV) expansion project for Swindon, and the land was acquired by developers for the construction of thousands of new homes.
The site of the former airfield has been completely and permanently redeveloped. It is now the location of a large housing estate known as 'Redlands Grove', developed by Vistry Group (which includes Bovis Homes and Linden Homes). Construction began around 2017, and the area is now a substantial residential community with new roads, houses, and public spaces. No trace of the runway, hangars, or any aviation infrastructure remains.
Redlands Airfield was a private, unlicensed general aviation airfield. It was not a major commercial or military airport, but rather a classic British 'farm strip' that served the local flying community. Its ICAO designator, GB-0084, is a UK-specific code for sites that are not officially licensed airports. Operations primarily consisted of light aircraft and microlights, operating on a 'Prior Permission Required' (PPR) basis. The airfield featured a single grass runway (approximately 09/27) and basic hangar facilities. Its significance lay in providing a local, accessible facility for recreational pilots and flying enthusiasts in the Swindon area for many years.
There are zero prospects for reopening. The land has been permanently repurposed for residential use as part of a strategic urban expansion plan for Swindon. The complete redevelopment of the site into the Redlands Grove housing estate makes any future aviation use impossible.
From a problem report:
Goodbye and thank you from Redlands Airfield.
After 32 years of our operating our grass strip airfield, based in the village of Wanborough to the east of Swindon in Wiltshire, we have now closed.
We would like to thank our customers and supporters for making Redlands a wonderful site for microlights and skydiving - and for the many thousands raised for charity at the airfield.
