Approximately 2019-2020. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the airfield was intact and operational through 2018. By mid-2020, the site was being cleared for new construction, and by 2021, the subsequent project was well underway.
Land redevelopment for renewable energy. The airfield was permanently closed to allow for the construction of a large-scale ground-mounted photovoltaic power station (solar farm). This represents a change in land use from recreational aviation to industrial energy production.
The site is no longer an airfield and is unrecognizable as such. The land has been completely repurposed and now hosts the 'Parc Solaire de Villeneuve-Renneville', a significant solar farm. The runways, taxiways, and any aviation-related buildings have been removed and replaced by rows of solar panels and associated electrical infrastructure.
The airfield was a local recreational aviation hub, not a commercial or major military airport. Its name, 'Champagne Vol Libre' (Free Flight), indicates its primary purpose. It served as a base for a local flying club focused on ultralight aircraft (known in French as ULM - Ultra-Léger Motorisé). Operations consisted of flight training, private recreational flights, and local gatherings for ultralight aviation enthusiasts. The facility was a simple grass runway with basic hangar facilities, typical for a private or club-operated French 'aérodrome'. Its significance was rooted in providing access to airspace for the local general aviation community.
Effectively zero. The permanent and large-scale nature of the solar power plant built on the former airfield site precludes any possibility of reopening it for aviation activities. The land has been fundamentally and permanently altered for a different industrial purpose.
