Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2011. A local news report from January 2021 mentioned that the heliport had been closed for 'about ten years'. An exact date is not publicly available.

Reason for Closure

The heliport's closure was a direct consequence of the reorganization and scaling down of the hospital site it served. The Dommartin-lès-Toul site was an annex of the main Centre Hospitalier de Toul. As medical services, particularly emergency and critical care, were consolidated at the main hospital campus (Site Saint-Charles) in Toul, the heliport at the Dommartin-lès-Toul location became operationally obsolete.

Current Status

The site of the former heliport is located on the grounds of the largely repurposed Dommartin-lès-Toul medical complex. While the physical concrete helipad with its 'H' marking may still be visible, it is officially decommissioned and is not in use for any aviation activities. The surrounding hospital buildings now house limited, non-emergency services, such as the 'Hôpital de Jour La Passerelle'.

Historical Significance

The Dommartin-lès-Toul Hospital Heliport (FR-0110) was the primary air access point for the Centre Hospitalier de Toul. Its main function was to support Emergency Medical Services (EMS), handling medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) and urgent inter-hospital patient transfers. It was used by helicopter ambulance services (like the French SAMU/SMUR) to transport critically ill or injured patients. Its closure created a significant logistical challenge for nearly a decade, as helicopters were forced to use the nearby Toul-Rosières Air Base (LFSL), requiring a time-consuming secondary transfer by road ambulance to reach the hospital.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero prospects for reopening the Dommartin-lès-Toul Hospital Heliport. It has been made permanently redundant. A new, modern heliport was constructed directly at the main Centre Hospitalier Saint-Charles site in Toul and became operational in late 2022. This new facility provides a far more efficient and direct link for emergency air transport, negating any need for the old heliport.
