It is home to the 1st Combat Helicopter Regiment (1er Régiment d'Hélicoptères de Combat - 1 RHC), which operates AS532UL Cougar Horizon AEW helicopters, and is slated to base Tigre helicopters in the near future.
Notable Features and History: The site's history as an airfield dates back to World War II, when it was used by the German Luftwaffe. Following the war, the base was constructed between 1952 and 1957 for the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) during the Cold War, serving as a front-line base. During its time as a USAF base, it hosted various units, including the 23rd Helicopter Squadron, the 513th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, and tactical reconnaissance wings, flying aircraft such as the H-21B, F-86D, F-102, RF-84F, RF-101C, and F-86H. A notable feature of its construction was the "marguerites," which were aircraft shelters designed for protection and dispersal. The base was returned to French control in 1967 following France's withdrawal from NATO's integrated military structure.
