Circa 2003-2004. The heliport was last officially listed in the German Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP VFR) in 2003. By 2004, it was noted as permanently closed in various unofficial aviation databases and flight simulator scenery addons, indicating operations ceased around this time.
The closure was not due to a single event but rather a combination of factors. The primary reasons include:
1. **Declining Demand:** The era of routine executive helicopter travel to city-center locations waned due to high costs and the availability of efficient high-speed rail and road links.
2. **Urban Redevelopment:** The Koelnmesse complex has undergone significant modernization and expansion since the early 2000s. The rooftop space was likely repurposed for more critical building infrastructure like HVAC systems.
3. **Regulatory and Environmental Concerns:** Increasing stringency in regulations for helicopter operations in dense urban areas, coupled with growing public sensitivity to noise pollution, made maintaining such a facility less viable.
The site of the former heliport is the rooftop of the Congress-Centrum Ost Koelnmesse. The helipad and its markings have been completely removed. Current satellite imagery shows the roof is now occupied by standard building infrastructure, including HVAC units, vents, and roofing materials. The building itself remains a fully operational and integral part of the Koelnmesse, hosting conferences, congresses, and events.
The Congress Center East Kölnmesse Heliport was a private rooftop helipad located directly on the Congress-Centrum Ost building. Its main purpose was to serve as an exclusive point of arrival and departure for VIPs, high-ranking corporate executives, and government officials attending major international trade fairs hosted at the Koelnmesse, such as Anuga, Photokina, and Gamescom. It provided a prestigious and time-efficient way to travel directly to the venue, bypassing traffic from nearby airports like Cologne/Bonn (CGN). The heliport symbolized the international importance and high-end service of the Cologne Trade Fair throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. A reopening is considered extremely unlikely due to the dense urban development in the area, strict noise and environmental regulations, and the excellent existing ground transportation infrastructure, which includes the major Köln Messe/Deutz railway station located adjacent to the convention center.
