The airfield was officially and permanently closed on December 31, 2015. The last day of flight operations took place on Sunday, September 27, 2015, marked by a 'fly-out' event by the local club.
The primary reason for the closure was economic and related to land use. The owner of the land, the Princely House of Waldburg-Wolfegg-Waldsee, terminated the long-standing lease agreement with the operating flying club. The landowner's intention was to revert the airfield property back to its original agricultural purpose.
The site of the former airfield has been fully converted back into agricultural land and is actively farmed. All aviation infrastructure, including the hangars, clubhouse, and runway markers, has been removed. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows open fields where the runway and facilities once stood, with no remaining trace of the former airport.
Ochsenhausen Airfield was a 'Sonderlandeplatz' (special landing site) with a grass runway (08/26, 600m x 30m). For over 60 years, it was the home base of the local flying club, Flugsportgruppe Ochsenhausen e.V., which was founded in 1951. The airfield was a significant hub for regional general aviation, primarily supporting recreational flying. Operations included gliding (winch launch and aerotow), motor gliding, and flights with light single-engine aircraft. It played a vital role in flight training and fostering a vibrant aviation community in the Upper Swabia region.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Ochsenhausen Airfield. The land is in private ownership and is used for agriculture. The former operating club, Flugsportgruppe Ochsenhausen, has successfully merged with the club in a neighboring city to form the 'Flugsportgruppe Ochsenhausen-Biberach e.V.' and has relocated all its operations to Biberach an der Riß Airfield (EDMB). This move ensures the continuity of the club's activities, making a return to the Ochsenhausen site unnecessary and highly improbable.
