The airfield was closed around late 2012. The operating club, Flugsportgruppe Urspring e.V., conducted its final flight operations in the autumn of 2012 after the lease for the land was officially terminated by the landowner.
The closure was a result of land redevelopment. The municipality of Lonsee, which owned the property, chose not to renew the lease with the flying club. The decision was made to repurpose the land for economic development, specifically for the creation of a new industrial and commercial park named 'Gewerbegebiet Lohnfeld'.
The site of the former airfield has been completely transformed. It is now the 'Gewerbegebiet Lohnfeld', a fully developed industrial and commercial park. The original runways, hangars, and other aviation-related infrastructure have been entirely removed and replaced with large industrial buildings, access roads, and parking facilities for various businesses.
For over 50 years, Urspring Airfield was a 'Segelfluggelände' (glider airfield) and the home base for the Flugsportgruppe Urspring e.V. (Urspring Flying Sports Club). It was a significant regional hub for recreational aviation, specializing in glider operations, including flight training, winch launches, and aerotows. The airfield also supported light motor aircraft used for towing and general aviation, making it a vital part of the local aviation community in the Alb-Donau district.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Urspring Airfield. The land has been permanently and irreversibly repurposed for industrial use. The former operating club, Flugsportgruppe Urspring, has since merged with the Flugsportverein Laichingen and relocated its activities to the Laichingen airfield (EDPJ), solidifying the permanent closure of the Urspring site.
