The primary reason for the closure was economic and related to land development. The lease agreement for the airfield's land was terminated by the landowner, the estate of Count von Westphalen. The landowner intended to redevelop the area for commercial purposes. The operating aviation club, Luftsportgemeinschaft Sundern e.V. (LSG Sundern), was unable to negotiate a new lease or find a suitable alternative location, leading to the cessation of all flight operations and the eventual dissolution of the club.
The site of the former airfield has been completely redeveloped. It is now the 'Gewerbegebiet Seidfeld,' a commercial and industrial park. The former grass runway and aviation facilities (hangars, clubhouse) have been entirely removed and replaced with roads, warehouses, and business premises. Satellite imagery of the coordinates confirms the land is now fully occupied by this commercial development.
Sundern-Seidfeld was a 'Sonderlandeplatz' (special landing site) that served as the home base for the Luftsportgemeinschaft Sundern e.V. since its establishment in the early 1960s. For nearly 50 years, it was a significant hub for general aviation and recreational flying in the Sauerland region. The airfield primarily handled gliders, utilizing both winch and aerotow launches, as well as light single-engine powered aircraft. It was a center for flight training and a social focal point for aviation enthusiasts. The airfield was well-known locally for its periodic 'Flugtage' (airshows), which attracted large crowds and showcased various aerial displays, strengthening the bond between the aviation community and the public.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the Sundern-Seidfeld Airfield. The land has been permanently repurposed and is now an established commercial zone. The original operating club was dissolved, and the physical infrastructure required for an airfield no longer exists, making a reopening infeasible.
