Approximately 1997-1998
The primary reason for closure was the expiration and non-renewal of the land lease agreement with the landowner, the Graf von Nesselrode. The land was subsequently designated as part of the 'Hildener Heide, Schönholz' nature reserve ('Naturschutzgebiet') and returned to agricultural use, making continued aviation operations impossible.
The site has been completely renaturalized and dismantled. All airfield infrastructure, including the grass runway, hangars, and clubhouse, has been removed. The land is now part of a protected nature reserve and is used for agriculture (fields and meadows) and public recreation such as walking and hiking. There are no visible remnants of its past as an airfield.
Hilden-Kesselweier was a 'Sonderlandeplatz' (special landing site) that served as the home base for the local air sports club, 'Luftsportgruppe Kesselweier e.V.', from the 1950s until its closure. For several decades, it was a significant local hub for recreational and general aviation in the region between Düsseldorf, Solingen, and Wuppertal. Operations primarily consisted of gliding (sailplanes), light aircraft flights, and pilot training. The airfield played an important role in the post-war revival of civil aviation in the area but held no military or major commercial significance.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. Its legal status as a protected nature reserve and its complete conversion back to natural and agricultural land make any future aviation use legally and practically impossible.
