The airport officially closed at the end of 2011. The lease agreement for the land expired on December 31, 2011, and was not renewed, marking the end of all flight operations.
The primary reason for the closure was economic and related to land use. The private owner of the property, the comital family von und zu Hoensbroech, decided not to renew the lease with the operating flight club. The stated intention was to return the land to full agricultural use, which was its original purpose. The broader context of the Lower Rhine region also includes extensive gravel extraction, which may have been a long-term consideration for the land's value.
The site of the former airfield has been completely reverted to agricultural land. All aviation infrastructure, including the grass runways, hangars, and clubhouse, has been removed. Current satellite imagery of the coordinates shows only cultivated fields, with no visible trace of the former airport. The operating club, LSV Sevelen, successfully relocated its members and aircraft to the nearby Grefrath-Niershorst Airfield (EDLF), where they continue their activities.
Sevelen Glider Field was a significant local hub for recreational aviation for over 40 years. Operated by the Luftsportverein (LSV) Sevelen e.V., which was founded in 1969, the airfield was dedicated primarily to glider operations. Activities included winch launching and aero-towing of gliders, as well as operations of motor gliders and the club's tow plane. It served as a vital training ground for new pilots and was an important social and sporting institution for the community in the Issum-Sevelen area, contributing significantly to local youth activities.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the Sevelen Glider Field. The land is privately owned and is actively used for agriculture. The original operating club is now well-established at a different location. Re-establishing an airport on this site would require a new lease agreement, significant investment, and complex new zoning and permit approvals, making a reopening highly improbable.
