The airfield officially and permanently closed on December 31, 2010.
The closure was the result of a contractual issue. The lease agreement between the operating air sports club (Luftsportverein Halver e.V.) and the consortium of farmers who owned the land was not renewed. The landowners decided to terminate the lease to reclaim the property for agricultural use and, subsequently, for more lucrative industrial development. There were no accidents or military reasons involved; it was a civil and economic decision.
The site has been completely de-commissioned as an airfield. The land has been returned to its owners and is primarily used for agriculture (fields and meadows). The former runway is no longer visible on the ground. Furthermore, the area has been officially rezoned and is designated for a large industrial and commercial park known as 'Gewerbegebiet Oeckinghausen/Höh'. Development plans for this industrial park have superseded any remnant of its aviation past.
Opened in 1956, Halver Airfield was a 'Sonderlandeplatz' (special landing site) that served as a key hub for general aviation and recreational flying in the Märkischer Kreis region for over 50 years. It was home to the Luftsportverein Halver e.V. and its operations primarily consisted of gliding (Segelflug), ultralight flying (Ultraleichtflug), and powered light aircraft operations. The airfield featured an approximately 600-meter grass runway and was a center for flight training, private pilot activities, and local aviation events, making it an important part of the community's social and recreational fabric.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening Halver Airfield. The closure is considered permanent. The operating club was forced to dissolve, the land has been repurposed, and the official zoning has been changed to industrial/commercial use, making a return to aviation operations legally and logistically impossible.
