Approximately 2008. While an exact date is not officially recorded in public databases, aviation community discussions and the removal from official charts point to its closure around this time.
The primary reason for closure was the non-renewal of the lease for the land. The airfield was operated by a private club on leased property. This decision was likely influenced by a combination of factors including economic viability for the small club, and the land's value and designation as part of the 'Wisseler Dünen' nature and recreational area. There is no indication that it was closed due to a major accident or for military conversion.
The site has been completely returned to nature. An examination of current satellite imagery shows no remaining trace of the runway, hangars, or any other aviation infrastructure. The land has been fully integrated back into the surrounding 'Wisseler Dünen' (Wissel Dunes) landscape, which is a protected nature and popular local recreation area known for its heathland and proximity to the Wisseler See lake. The former airfield is now indistinguishable from the surrounding meadows and fields.
Kleve-Wisseler Dünen was a designated 'Ultraleichtfluggelände', a specific classification in Germany for an airfield intended for ultralight aircraft. Its significance was purely local, serving as a home base for the 'UL-Flieger-Club Kalkar e.V.' and other recreational pilots in the Lower Rhine region. It consisted of a simple grass runway (approximately 400 meters long) and catered exclusively to sport and general aviation. It never handled commercial or scheduled traffic and was not associated with the larger, nearby Weeze Airport (formerly RAF Laarbruch).
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. Given that the land has been fully renaturalized and is part of a protected nature and recreation zone, the legal, environmental, and financial barriers to re-establishing an airfield on the site are prohibitive. The site is considered permanently closed to all aviation activities.
