End of October 2009
The airfield was closed because the private landowner, a farming family, chose not to renew the lease agreement with the operating flying club, the Motorfluggruppe Zürcher Oberland (MGZO). The landowners cited the increasing burden of managing the airfield alongside their agricultural operations and expressed a desire to return the land fully to farming. While there had been historical complaints from some local residents and environmental groups regarding noise, the direct and final cause of the closure was the termination of the lease by the property owner.
The site has been completely decommissioned and fully returned to agricultural use. The runway, taxiways, and any associated airfield infrastructure have been removed. The land is now actively used as meadows and for crop cultivation by the owning family. The nearby 'Restaurant Hasenstrick', once popular with pilots and visitors to the airfield, continues to operate as a public restaurant but has no affiliation with any aviation activity.
Opened in 1963, Hasenstrick Airfield was a private grass airfield (Sonderlandeplatz) that served as a significant hub for general aviation in the Zurich Oberland region for 46 years. It was the home base of the Motorfluggruppe Zürcher Oberland (MGZO) and primarily handled private light aircraft and motor gliders. The airfield featured a grass runway (08/26) approximately 500 meters long. It was well-regarded by the recreational flying community for its scenic location and hosted popular events like 'Fly-ins', contributing significantly to the local aviation culture.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the Hasenstrick Airfield. The land is privately owned and integrated into a working farm. Given the dense population of the region, any proposal to reopen would likely face significant political, public, and environmental opposition regarding noise and land use. The former operating club has since relocated its activities, making a revival of the airfield highly improbable.
