Circa late 2000. The aerodrome was officially listed in the Transport Canada 'Canada Flight Supplement' dated June 8, 2000, but was no longer listed in the subsequent edition dated December 28, 2000, indicating it was closed during that interval.
The exact reason for closure is not publicly documented. However, as it was a private aerodrome registered to an individual (M. Drinkwater), the closure was most likely due to personal reasons such as the sale of the property, the owner's retirement from aviation, or the prohibitive costs of maintenance and insurance.
The site is currently a private residential property. High-resolution satellite imagery shows that the outline of the former turf runway is still perfectly visible and is maintained as a large, mowed grassy area. A building that appears to be the original hangar is also still present on the property near the southern end of the strip. While the physical runway remains, it is no longer a registered or active aerodrome.
Washago Aerodrome was a private general aviation airfield serving the local area. It was not a major commercial or military airport. Its primary function was to serve as a base for the owner's personal aircraft and possibly those of invited guests. When active in 2000, it featured a single turf runway (18/36) with a length of 2,640 feet and a width of 100 feet. Its significance lies in its role as a representative example of the many small, private airfields that support Canada's general aviation community.
There are no known plans or public prospects for reopening the Washago Aerodrome. As the land is privately owned and has been used as a residence for over two decades, any effort to re-certify and reopen the airfield would be at the sole discretion of the current landowner and is considered extremely unlikely.
