The heliport's closure was a direct result of the relocation of the entire Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. The hospital moved from its original location at 1235 Reynolds Street to a new, larger, state-of-the-art facility at 3001 Hospital Gate in Oakville. As the heliport was an integral part of the old hospital's emergency infrastructure, it was decommissioned along with the rest of the site when operations were transferred to the new location.
The site of the former Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and its heliport has been completely redeveloped. The old hospital building was demolished in 2017. The land has been repurposed and is now home to the Oakville Trafalgar Community Centre, a modern recreational facility that includes a swimming pool, fitness center, and various community spaces, along with a new park. The original heliport no longer exists.
The Trafalgar Memorial Hospital Heliport (CA-1081) was a vital asset for emergency medical services in Oakville and the surrounding Halton Region. Its primary function was to serve as a landing zone for air ambulances, most notably those operated by Ornge, Ontario's air ambulance provider. The heliport facilitated the rapid transport of critically ill and trauma patients, significantly reducing travel time to the hospital's emergency department. It also enabled swift inter-hospital transfers for patients requiring specialized care available at other major medical centers. The heliport was a key link in the provincial chain of survival for time-sensitive medical emergencies.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the heliport at its original location. The site has been permanently repurposed for community and residential use, and the hospital it served is gone. A new, modern heliport (Transport Canada Identifier: CTMH) is fully operational at the current Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, which now handles all air ambulance and medical helicopter traffic for the region.
