Approximately March 2011. The aerodrome was privately owned and operated by John A. Carling, who passed away on March 2, 2011. The field ceased to be an active, registered aerodrome following his death.
The closure was a direct result of the death of the owner and sole operator. As a private airstrip, its existence and maintenance were dependent on the owner. With his passing, the property was no longer used or maintained as an active airfield.
The site is now private farmland. Satellite imagery shows that the former grass runway is still faintly visible but is unmaintained, overgrown, and has effectively returned to being part of the surrounding agricultural fields. The building that served as a hangar appears to still be standing on the property, likely used for farm storage. The land is not used for any aviation activities.
Carlingford Field was a private aerodrome used for general aviation. It consisted of a single turf runway (approximately 2,400 feet, oriented 18/36) and a hangar. Its owner, John Carling, was a lifelong farmer and a licensed pilot who used the field for his personal aircraft. The aerodrome served as a local hub for recreational flying and was known to pilots in the region. It primarily handled light, single-engine aircraft like Cessnas and Pipers and held no commercial or military significance.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Carlingford Field. The land remains private property and is integrated into a working farm. Re-establishing it as an aerodrome would require a new owner with a specific interest in aviation to purchase the land and make a significant investment to restore the runway and facilities to meet modern standards, which is considered highly unlikely.
