The airport closed permanently around late 2014 to early 2015. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the airfield was intact through 2014, with construction for the solar farm visibly underway by mid-2015.
The closure was a result of economic and land-use conversion. The property was sold and redeveloped into a large-scale commercial solar energy farm. The decision was not related to accidents, military conversion, or lack of aviation activity, but rather a more profitable use for the land.
The site has been completely transformed and is now the location of the Grand Valley Solar Farm. This is a large photovoltaic power station developed by Canadian Solar Solutions Inc. When viewed from above via satellite, the layout of the solar panel arrays distinctly follows the outline of the former runways, creating a 'ghost' image of the old airfield.
Farmington Field was a privately owned and operated general aviation aerodrome that was a cherished asset for the local flying community. It primarily served recreational pilots, private aircraft owners, and ultralight enthusiasts in Dufferin County and the surrounding region. The airfield featured two well-maintained turf runways in an 'X' configuration: Runway 14/32, which was approximately 3,100 feet long, and a crosswind runway 05/23, approximately 2,000 feet long. It did not handle scheduled commercial or military operations but was known as a friendly and accessible field for general aviation.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening Farmington Field. The land has been permanently repurposed with long-term infrastructure for industrial-scale energy production. The significant investment in the solar farm makes any future return to aviation use infeasible.
