Approximately 2018-2019. The airfield was listed in the Canadian Flight Supplement (CFS) until this period. Satellite imagery after this time shows the runway in a state of increasing disuse and overgrowth.
The airfield was a private facility located on residential property. Its closure is attributed to the owner ceasing aviation operations, possibly following the sale of the property. It was not closed for commercial, military, or safety-mandated reasons, but rather a change in private land use.
The site is no longer a functional airfield. Satellite imagery clearly shows the ghost of the former grass runway, which is now overgrown with grass and encroaching trees. The land is part of a large, private residential lot in the Township of Springwater, Ontario. A large house and a building that previously served as a hangar still exist on the property at the west end of the former runway. The land is maintained as a large lawn or field but is not used for aviation.
Covered Bridge Airfield was a private aerodrome serving the general aviation community. It was not a commercial airport and had no scheduled flights. Its primary operation was recreational flying for the property owner and likely invited pilots. The airfield featured a single, well-maintained turf runway, approximately 2,600 feet long, suitable for light single-engine aircraft and ultralights. Its name was derived from its location within the 'Covered Bridge Estates' residential development and its proximity to 'Covered Bridge Trail'. For pilots, it served as a known visual flight rules (VFR) landmark in the region north of Barrie.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Covered Bridge Airfield. As the land is privately owned and part of a residential estate, any reopening would be solely at the discretion and expense of the current landowner. Given its state of disuse and integration into a residential property, a return to aviation operations is considered highly unlikely.
