Circa 2018-2019. The airport was a private, unregistered aerodrome that was delisted from the Canadian Flight Supplement (CFS) around this time. The exact date of the final flight is unknown, but operations ceased following events related to the property's ownership.
The primary reason for the closure was the passing of its long-time owner and operator, George Miller. As a private airfield, its existence was dependent on the owner's initiative and resources. After his death, the property was transferred, and the new owners did not continue to maintain or operate it as an active aerodrome.
The site is now private property and is no longer a functioning airport. Satellite imagery shows the former turf runway is still clearly visible as a long, open grass strip, but it is no longer maintained for aviation purposes and is gradually becoming overgrown. The residence and a large building that previously served as a hangar are still present on the property. The land has not been redeveloped for residential or commercial use and retains its rural character.
Willoughby Airport was a private general aviation airfield significant to the local Niagara aviation community. It was not a public airport but was known and used by its owner and other local pilots, likely by invitation. It featured a single, well-maintained turf runway (Runway 18/36) approximately 2,640 feet long. The airport primarily handled light, single-engine aircraft such as Cessnas and Pipers for recreational flying. It represented a classic example of a 'grass-roots' private airstrip, contributing to the general aviation fabric of the region for several decades.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Willoughby Airport. Given that the land is privately owned and the closure was due to the owner's passing, its reactivation as an aerodrome is highly unlikely. It would require a new owner with the specific desire, resources, and regulatory approval to re-establish aviation operations, which is not anticipated.
