Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2008. The aerodrome was listed in the Canada Flight Supplement (CFS) in 2007 but was removed in subsequent editions. Satellite imagery from that period shows the runway being overtaken by construction and redevelopment.

Reason for Closure

Economic reasons and land redevelopment. The private airstrip was closed to accommodate the expansion of the adjacent Ajax Downs facility. The land was repurposed for the construction of large parking lots required for the growing OLG Slots facility (now known as Casino Ajax) and the racetrack. The commercial value of the land for the entertainment complex far outweighed its utility as a private airstrip.

Current Status

The airport site has been completely redeveloped and is no longer recognizable as an airfield. The exact location of the former runway is now a large, paved parking lot that serves Casino Ajax and the Ajax Downs racetrack. The entire property is a major commercial and entertainment hub, with no physical traces of the airport remaining.

Historical Significance

Ajax / Picov Downs Airport was a private aerodrome directly associated with the Picov Downs quarter horse racetrack. Its primary purpose was to provide convenient air access for the Picov family, prominent horse owners, trainers, veterinarians, and other key personnel involved in the horse racing industry. The airport facilitated private travel, allowing individuals to fly directly to the track. It operated with a single turf runway, approximately 2,600 feet (792 meters) in length, and handled small general aviation aircraft such as Cessnas and Pipers. It was a classic example of a private utility airstrip supporting a specific commercial enterprise.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land is now a high-value, fully developed commercial site. The significant urban growth in Ajax, combined with the site's current use as a major entertainment venue, makes the re-establishment of an airport at this location completely unfeasible from a logistical, zoning, and economic standpoint.
