The airport was officially delisted from the Canada Flight Supplement (CFS) and permanently closed on July 21, 2011. The property had been listed for sale for several years prior to its final closure.
The closure was due to economic and personal reasons. The airport was privately owned and operated, and the owner decided to retire and sell the land. Like many small general aviation airports, it faced challenges related to profitability and the high value of the underlying real estate. The new owners repurposed the land for non-aviation activities.
The site is now a private property used for commercial and agricultural purposes. Satellite imagery clearly shows the outlines of the former runways, but they are overgrown with grass and are used for cultivating hay and storing large equipment and vehicles. The hangars and other buildings that remain on the property have been repurposed for private storage and workshops. The airport is defunct, with no remaining aviation infrastructure in operational condition.
Established in the 1960s, Simcoe Airport (which used the former Transport Canada Identifier CPF9) was a significant general aviation facility for the town of Simcoe and surrounding Norfolk County in Ontario. It featured two runways (one asphalt, one turf) and served a community of private pilots. The airport was home to a flying club, offered flight training, and supported recreational flying and local aviation events. For nearly five decades, it was an important piece of local transportation infrastructure and a hub for the region's aviation enthusiasts.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Simcoe Airport. The land has been fully converted to private, non-aviation use. The region's general aviation needs are served by other nearby airports, including the Tillsonburg Regional Airport (CYTB) and the Brantford Municipal Airport (CYFD). A reopening is considered highly improbable due to the private ownership, current land use, and the availability of alternative facilities.
