Approximately 2006. The airport was listed in the Canada Flight Supplement (CFS) until at least the year 2000 but was de-listed and confirmed closed by 2007. The exact date of final operations is not publicly recorded, but its closure occurred in the mid-2000s.
The closure was due to economic factors and the sale of the private property. Like many small, privately-owned general aviation airfields in the Greater Toronto Area, rising land values and development pressure made it more profitable to sell the land for other uses (in this case, agriculture) than to continue operating the airfield. There is no indication that it was closed due to a specific accident or for military purposes.
The site is currently private property and is used as farmland. Satellite imagery of the coordinates (43.994052, -79.640708) clearly shows the land has been converted to agricultural use. Faint outlines of the former grass runways are still visible as crop marks or soil discolorations, but they are overgrown and no longer suitable for aviation. The hangars and associated buildings appear to be either gone or repurposed for agricultural storage. The land has not been developed into a residential subdivision but is no longer an active or recognizable airfield.
Pottageville Airport was a small, private, unregistered aerodrome that served the general aviation community in Southern Ontario. It was a classic example of a rural grass-strip airfield. The airport featured two turf runways, Runway 03/21 (2,200 feet) and Runway 13/31 (1,800 feet), arranged in an 'X' pattern. It primarily handled light single-engine aircraft for recreational flying and was a cherished local landmark for pilots. It was not a commercial hub but played a role in the local aviation fabric, providing a base for private pilots away from the busier, controlled airports closer to Toronto.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Pottageville Airport. The land is privately owned and has been fully integrated into agricultural operations for over 15 years. Given its location within King Township, an area with significant development pressure and high land values, the likelihood of the site being converted back into an airport is virtually zero.
I was only 9 years old when we left the area, but I've put a POI about where I think the airport really was. Rumour had it back then that the owner had put everything in his wife's name because he'd been sued over an accident.
