Approximately between 2008 and 2010. The exact date is not publicly documented, but aviation publications like the Canada Flight Supplement ceased listing it as an active aerodrome during this period.
The closure was due to the sale of the private property on which the aerodrome was located. As a private field, its operation was dependent on the owner. When the property was sold, the new landowner did not continue to maintain and register it as an active aerodrome, leading to its de-registration and closure.
The site remains a private rural property. Satellite imagery confirms that the original grass runway is still clearly visible, though it is no longer maintained to aviation standards and now serves as a large lawn or field. The hangar and the associated private residence are still standing on the property. The land has not been redeveloped for industrial, commercial, or dense residential use.
The airport was a registered private aerodrome, known locally and to pilots as 'Martin Field'. It was not a public or commercial airport. Its significance was primarily as a base for the owner's personal aircraft and for use by invited members of the local general aviation community. The facility consisted of a single turf runway (oriented 09/27) measuring approximately 2,200 feet. It represented a typical small, private airstrip supporting recreational flying in rural Ontario, contributing on a small scale to the region's general aviation activity.
There are no known public plans, proposals, or prospects for reopening the aerodrome. Since it is private property, any decision to reactivate it would be solely at the discretion and expense of the current landowner. Given that it has been closed and de-registered for over a decade, a return to aviation service is considered highly improbable.
I got my PPL license there in 1971 with Townsend Air Service. It was also a Lake Amphibian distributor. Not sure what year it closed. Elton Townsend moved the operation to Muskoka Airport.
