Approximately late 1970s to early 1980s. An exact date is not documented, but its closure coincides with the failure of the real estate development it was built to serve.
The airport was closed due to economic reasons, specifically the failure of the 'Twin Lakes' residential and resort development project it was exclusively built for. The airstrip was a key piece of infrastructure intended to fly in potential buyers and serve future residents. When the development company, Bahama-Caribbean Development Corporation, faced financial collapse and abandoned the project in the mid-to-late 1970s, the airport lost its sole purpose and was subsequently abandoned as well.
The site is completely abandoned and derelict. Satellite imagery shows a clearly defined but heavily overgrown runway that is returning to nature. The asphalt or dirt surface is covered with shrubs and small trees, rendering it completely unusable for any aviation purposes. There are no remaining buildings, hangars, or support infrastructure visible. The access roads are likely impassable, and the site has no current use.
Andros Central / Twin Lakes Airport was a private, general aviation airstrip constructed in the late 1960s or early 1970s. Its historical significance is tied directly to the speculative real estate boom in the Bahamas during that era. The airport's only function was to support the ambitious but ultimately failed 'Twin Lakes' development on North Andros. It was designed to handle light private aircraft, ferrying investors and prospective landowners to the remote site. The airport never served commercial or military operations and its existence was brief, now serving as a relic of a failed development plan.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. Its remote location, advanced state of decay, and the high cost of land clearing and reconstruction make any revival economically unfeasible. Furthermore, Andros Island is adequately served by other operational airports, including Andros Town International Airport (MYAF) and San Andros Airport (MYAN), making a new airstrip at this location redundant.
