The airport was officially deactivated following a municipal zoning law change (Lei Complementar Nº 33) on December 20, 2013. Operations likely ceased in the period leading up to or shortly after this date.
The closure was driven by economic and urban development reasons. The airport was small, with limited infrastructure, serving only general aviation. As the city of Mafra expanded, the land became more valuable for urban and industrial use. The municipal government prioritized redeveloping the centrally-located site to foster economic growth, leading to its rezoning and subsequent deactivation.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped. The area was rezoned and is now the 'Condomínio Industrial Hugo Werner' (Hugo Werner Industrial Condominium). Satellite imagery and local development plans confirm that industrial buildings, warehouses, new streets, and residential lots now occupy the land where the runway and airport facilities once stood.
Named in honor of Hugo Werner, a former mayor of Mafra, the airport served as the city's primary civil airfield for general aviation. It was a vital hub for private pilots, air taxi services, and agricultural aviation. It did not handle scheduled commercial passenger flights due to its basic facilities, which likely included an unpaved runway. Its historical importance was purely local, providing air connectivity for business and private travel for the region before its closure.
There are no prospects for reopening Hugo Werner Airport. The land has been permanently repurposed and is integrated into the city's urban and industrial fabric. Any future civil aviation infrastructure for Mafra would necessitate either negotiating the use of the nearby military airbase (Aeródromo Militar de Mafra, ICAO: SBMA) or constructing a new airport at a different location.
