June 14, 2016. On this date, Brazil's National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) officially and permanently excluded the aerodrome from the national registry through directive Portaria Nº 1833/SIA. The airport had been interdicted for operations for some time prior to this final decision.
Regulatory non-compliance and infrastructure decay. The airport was closed because the local municipal administration, which was responsible for its operation, failed to meet the mandatory safety and operational standards set by ANAC. This included a failure to renew the airport's official registration, as well as deficiencies in infrastructure maintenance, such as the condition of the runway surface and inadequate perimeter fencing.
The site has been permanently repurposed by the municipality of Irati. The former airport grounds are being redeveloped into a multi-use area featuring a Technology Park (Parque Tecnológico de Irati) and a Municipal Events Center (Centro de Eventos). The old runway and airport facilities are being removed or integrated into this new development, which aims to foster local economic growth in technology and business.
Named after a former mayor, the Aeroporto Municipal Francisco Gorski (ICAO: SSIT) was a vital piece of local infrastructure for the city of Irati and the surrounding region in the state of Paraná. It primarily served general aviation traffic, including private aircraft, air taxis, and agricultural aviation. Crucially, it was also used for aeromedical transport (air ambulance services), providing a critical link for emergency healthcare. The airport did not handle regular large-scale commercial passenger flights but was essential for local business, agriculture, and public health.
None. The prospect of reopening the airport at its original location is zero due to the permanent closure by ANAC and the complete repurposing of the land for non-aviation development. There are no known active plans or proposals for the construction of a new replacement airport for the city of Irati.
