The airport ceased operations in the early 1990s. A specific, official closure date is not documented as it was a gradual process of abandonment following the major political and economic shifts in Bulgaria after 1989.
The closure was due to economic reasons. The airport's primary function was to support the socialist-era collective agricultural system. With the fall of the communist government, the state-run collective farms (known as TKZS) were dismantled, and the centralized, state-funded agricultural aviation sector collapsed. Without its core purpose and funding, the airfield became obsolete and fell into disuse.
The airport is currently abandoned and in a state of significant decay. Satellite imagery shows a single paved runway that is still clearly visible but is cracked, weathered, and partially overgrown with grass and shrubs. The runway and adjacent concrete aprons are sometimes used by local farmers for the temporary storage of agricultural products like hay bales. The former hangars and support buildings are derelict and presumed to be structurally unsound. The site is not used for any aviation activities and is sometimes used by locals for informal gatherings or unauthorized drag racing.
Ryakhovo Airport was a key agricultural aviation airfield ('Selskostopansko letishte' in Bulgarian) during the People's Republic of Bulgaria (1946-1990). It was part of a dense, nationwide network of similar small airfields dedicated to supporting large-scale, intensive farming. Operations primarily involved aircraft like the Antonov An-2 and the Zlin Z-37 'Čmelák' for crop dusting, aerial seeding, and the application of fertilizers and pesticides. The airport was vital for the high productivity of the vast, fertile agricultural lands in the Danubian Plain region surrounding Ryakhovo.
There are no known or credible plans for the reopening of Ryakhovo Airport. The infrastructure would require a complete and costly reconstruction of the runway, taxiways, and buildings. Given the lack of commercial or private aviation demand in the immediate rural area and the proximity of the larger (though also underutilized) Ruse Airport, there is no economic incentive for its revival. The site remains private or municipal property with no prospects for a return to aviation use.
