Late 2017. The airfield officially ceased operations at the end of 2017 after the land was sold for redevelopment.
Urban development and economic factors. The private land on which the airfield operated was sold to real estate developer Hyboma. The closure was necessary to make way for the construction of a large residential housing project, as the value of the land for development outweighed its use as an airfield.
The site has been completely transformed and is no longer recognizable as an airfield. It has been redeveloped into a large residential neighborhood called 'Den Boskouter'. Construction of new houses, streets, and public green spaces began around 2018, and the area is now a suburban housing estate. All aviation infrastructure, including the runway and hangars, has been demolished.
Oostakker Airfield was a private grass airstrip that served the recreational aviation community for approximately 30 years, from the late 1980s until its closure. It was the home base for the 'ULM club Oostakker' and was primarily used by Ultralight Motorized (ULM) aircraft, though it also handled some other general aviation traffic. Its significance was mainly local, providing a key facility for flight training and recreational flying for enthusiasts in the Ghent region. It was known for its friendly, club-like atmosphere rather than for major commercial or military operations.
None. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The land has been permanently repurposed for high-density residential use, making a return to aviation activities at this location impossible.
