Military restructuring and consolidation. The heliport was part of the Glons Air Base, a NATO Control and Reporting Centre (CRC). Its operational air defense control functions were merged with the Dutch counterpart and relocated to a new joint facility, the Air Operations Control Station (AOCS) in Nieuw-Milligen, Netherlands. This closure was a strategic decision to modernize and centralize NATO's air defense command structure.
The site is not abandoned. Following the deactivation of the CRC, the Belgian Ministry of Defence announced plans to redevelop the base. It is currently being transformed into the central hub for Belgium's new military Cyber Command. The facility will also house other intelligence and security units, making it a key center for modern defense operations. While the heliport's specific ICAO designation is defunct, the physical helipad infrastructure likely remains for use by the military units now occupying the site.
The heliport (BE-0070) was not a public or commercial facility but an integral part of the Glons Air Base, officially known as 'Kwartier Majoor Vlieger Housiau'. Established during the Cold War in the 1950s, this base was a critical NATO Air Defence facility. As a Control and Reporting Centre, its primary mission was 24/7 air surveillance and fighter control for a significant sector of NATO airspace, using the large, distinctive radar domes on site. The heliport facilitated the base's operations, serving logistical needs, rapid personnel transport, and VIP visits.
There are no plans to reopen the facility as a public or independently designated heliport. The helipad will be used exclusively for military purposes in support of the new Cyber Command and other units based at the redeveloped 'Kwartier Majoor Vlieger Housiau'. Its role remains ancillary to the primary mission of the military base.
