The heliport was reported as unused in official documents by 2002 and was formally decommissioned in the early 2000s. An exact date of final closure is not publicly available, but it has not been operational for over two decades.
The primary reason for closure was a lack of use, making it economically non-viable to maintain and certify. The high costs associated with a heliport were not justified for a facility that was rarely, if ever, used. Contributing factors likely included the operational challenges and potential for noise complaints in the dense urban and residential area surrounding the university campus.
The site remains the rooftop of the ULB Sports center at the Solbosch campus. Satellite imagery shows the faint, weathered markings of the helipad—a large 'H' inside a circle—are still visible on the roof's surface. However, the site is no longer certified, maintained, or equipped as an active heliport. It functions simply as the roof for the university sports complex below.
The ULB Heliport was a private rooftop helipad located on the sports center building ('Bâtiment S') of the Université libre de Bruxelles's main Solbosch campus. The building was inaugurated in 1989, and the heliport was part of its original design. It was intended for official university use, likely for the rapid transport of personnel, VIPs, or sensitive materials between campuses or to other institutions. It was not the primary medical heliport for the university's main hospital (Hôpital Erasme), which is on a different campus. The heliport's existence was characteristic of an era when private heliports were seen as a modern solution for urban logistics, though many, like this one, ultimately proved impractical.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the ULB Heliport. The Brussels-Capital Region has stringent regulations regarding helicopter flights and noise pollution, making the re-certification of a heliport in such a densely populated residential and academic area extremely unlikely. The political and public opposition to urban helicopter traffic would present a significant barrier to any such proposal.
