The closure was a private decision by the airfield's owner/operator to cease aviation activities. Reports from the aviation community at the time indicate the owner wished to retire from operating the airfield. It was not closed due to a specific accident, regulatory action, or economic failure of a club.
The site has reverted to agricultural use. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows that the former grass runway is now an overgrown field, likely used for pasture or hay. While the faint outline of the runway is still visible from the air, there are no markings or infrastructure to support aviation. A small building, likely the former hangar, appears to still be on the property, but there is no longer any aviation activity.
Lierneux Microlight Airfield was a private, unpaved (grass) airstrip serving the general aviation community. Its primary function was to support recreational flying for microlight aircraft, also known as ultralights (ULM in French/Dutch). It was a locally significant site for aviation enthusiasts in the Ardennes region of Wallonia, providing a base for private pilots to operate from. It did not handle commercial, cargo, or military operations.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Lierneux Microlight Airfield. The land is privately owned and has been fully converted back to non-aviation use. Re-establishing an airfield would require a new initiative, significant investment, and a full regulatory approval process, none of which are currently underway.
