Approximately 2014
The airfield was closed following the non-renewal of its operating permit by the Belgian Civil Aviation Authority (Direction Générale du Transport Aérien - DGTA). The primary driver for this decision was significant and persistent opposition from local residents and political entities due to noise complaints and environmental concerns associated with the ultralight aircraft operations.
The site has been completely decommissioned and the land has been fully returned to agricultural use. Current satellite imagery shows the area as cultivated farmland, with no visible remnants of the runway, hangars, or any other aviation-related infrastructure. The physical airfield no longer exists.
Bassenge-Wonck was a private recreational airfield dedicated specifically to ultralight (ULM) aviation. It was the home base for the 'ULM Club du Geer' and served as a local hub for enthusiasts in the Liège province. The facility consisted of a simple grass runway (approximately 06/24) and basic amenities for club members. Its significance was purely for recreational flying and pilot training within the ultralight community, with no commercial or military role.
There are no known plans or credible prospects for reopening the airfield. Given that the closure was a result of official permit revocation driven by strong local opposition, any attempt to re-establish an airfield at this location would face significant legal and community hurdles, making a reopening highly improbable.
