September 1, 2017. The closure was reported in local media about three weeks later, on September 21, 2017.
The closure was a personal decision by the private owner and operator, Willy De Lantsheer. After running the airfield for 30 years, he decided to retire and enjoy his pension. There was no successor to take over the operations, leading to the permanent closure.
The site has been fully decommissioned and reverted to agricultural use. The former grass runway and airfield infrastructure have been removed, and the land is now integrated into the surrounding farmland. Satellite imagery confirms that the area is actively farmed and no longer recognizable as an airfield.
Oombergen Airfield was a private, recreational airfield that operated for approximately 30 years (c. 1987-2017). It featured a single 400-meter grass runway (01/19) and was a significant local hub for the Ultralight Motorized (ULM) aviation community in the East Flanders region. It was not used for commercial or military purposes but was well-regarded by hobbyist pilots for its friendly, informal atmosphere and its role in supporting general aviation and recreational flying.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The closure was definitive, driven by the owner's retirement and the subsequent conversion of the land. A return to aviation use is considered highly improbable.
I've added Zomergem heliport to the site. All I have is a lat/long and a name, no other details.
does anyone have the gps or directions to zomergem airport?
EBZM is now a heliport in Zomergem (strictly PPR)
Thanks - I've marked it as closed. Are you sure no one uses it occasionally (gliders, ultralights, etc.?).
The correct name is Oombergen. It is along the road N42
Aerodrome closed long since; appears to have been still active in the early 1990's.
