Carinthia State Police Directorate Heliport

The heliport was closed due to structural safety concerns. An expert assessment concluded that the vibrations from landing helicopters could potentially cause damage to the building's structure, particularly the facade and windows. The estimated cost to reinforce the building and rectify the issue was deemed prohibitively expensive relative to the operational need, leading to its permanent closure.

The physical helipad, including its markings, still exists on the roof of the State Police Directorate building at Buchengasse 3, 9020 Klagenfurt am Wörthersee. However, it is strictly non-operational and has been indefinitely closed to all air traffic since 2015. The building itself continues to serve as the active headquarters for the Carinthian State Police.

The Carinthia State Police Directorate Heliport (AT-0033) was a rooftop helipad located on the new state police headquarters, which was completed and opened around 2012. It was designed to be used by the Austrian Air Police (Flugpolizei) for rapid deployment, emergency response, and transporting personnel directly to the command and control center. Its operational life was very short, lasting only about three years (c. 2012-2015), before the structural flaws were identified. Its significance is less about a long history of operations and more as an example of a modern infrastructure project that failed due to engineering and planning issues.

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. The high cost of the necessary structural repairs is the primary barrier. Officials have stated that the operational advantage of the rooftop heliport is minimal, as the main, fully-equipped Air Police base (Flugeinsatzstelle Klagenfurt) is located just a few minutes' drive away at the Klagenfurt Airport (IATA: KLU, ICAO: LOWK).
