Malta Air Charter (ICAO: MAC) was a Maltese airline that provided helicopter services and charter operations. The airline ceased its operations in 2004.
###
Malta Air Charter Company Limited was established in 1970 but commenced operations later, in 1990, after facing various challenges. The airline was a subsidiary of Air Malta, the former flag carrier of Malta. Its primary function included operating helicopter services and domestic passenger shuttles between the Maltese Islands, specifically linking Malta and Gozo. Additionally, it leased aircraft from its parent company, Air Malta, for charter operations.
The airline was based in Malta, with its operational focus on inter-island helicopter transport and charter flights. During its operational period, Malta Air Charter's fleet comprised 3 Boeing 737-400 aircraft for charter services and 2 Mil Mi-8 (26-seat Soviet-built helicopters) for its inter-island shuttle services.
Malta Air Charter did not have any known membership in major global airline alliances such as Star Alliance, SkyTeam, or Oneworld. Its route network was primarily regional, centered on the Maltese archipelago, complemented by ad-hoc international charter flights facilitated through its leased Boeing aircraft. The airline's operations, particularly the helicopter service, reached a peak of 64,000 passengers in 1994 but saw a decline in demand, leading to its eventual shutdown by Air Malta. The airline ceased all operations on November 1, 2004.
