Avianca (ICAO: AAR) is the largest airline in Colombia and holds the distinction of being the second-oldest airline in the world still in operation, tracing its origins back to December 5, 1919, when it was founded as SCADTA (Sociedad Colombo Alemana de Transporte Aéreo) in Barranquilla, Colombia. In 1940, SCADTA merged with SACO to form Aerovías Nacionales de Colombia S.A., or Avianca. Avianca is the flagship of a group of Latin American airlines that operate together through a codesharing system.
The airline's primary operational base and main hub is El Dorado International Airport (BOG) in Bogotá, Colombia. Avianca also maintains secondary hubs and focus cities, including Medellín, Cali, Barranquilla, San José (Costa Rica), Quito (Ecuador), Miami (USA), and San Salvador (El Salvador), which serves as a significant hub for Avianca El Salvador. Avianca's fleet, consisting of over 130 aircraft, primarily features Airbus A320 family aircraft (A319, A320, A321) for short to medium-haul domestic and international routes, and Boeing 787 Dreamliners for long-haul flights. Airbus A330s are also operated for cargo services.
Avianca boasts an extensive route network, serving over 75 direct destinations across 27 countries in the Americas and Europe. This includes 68 international routes and 44 domestic routes within Colombia, alongside 63 "fifth-freedom" routes between third countries. As a founding member of the Star Alliance, Avianca connects its passengers to a global network of destinations. The airline offers various cabin classes: Economy, Premium Economy, and Business Class. On long-haul international flights, particularly with Boeing 787 aircraft, Avianca's Insignia Business Class provides a premium experience with lie-flat seats and direct aisle access. Services vary by cabin and route, typically including complimentary snacks in Economy and more comprehensive meals, beverages, and lounge access for Business Class travelers.
