Salem Airport (SXV/VOSM) is a public domestic airport serving the city of Salem in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located at Kamalapuram, approximately 20 km (12 mi) northwest of the city center. The airport is owned by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and operated by the Airports Authority of India.
Notable Features and History: Opened in April 1993, the airport was partially funded by private donations, including a contribution from the Salem Steel Plant. Initially, it had a 1,350 m (4,430 ft) runway, which was later expanded. Early commercial services to Chennai via Coimbatore were withdrawn due to low patronage. The airport saw intermittent commercial operations, including a service by Kingfisher Airlines from 2009 to 2011, which was also suspended due to financial issues.
The airport was identified under the Government of India's UDAN regional connectivity scheme in 2018, leading to its status being changed to "unserved" to facilitate new flights. TruJet launched flights to Chennai in 2018 but suspended operations in 2022 due to bankruptcy.
The airport is spread across 136 acres (55 ha) and features a single asphalt runway, 04/22, measuring 1,806 m (5,925 ft) in length. It is equipped with navigational facilities such as Very High Frequency radio, Precision Approach Path Indicator, and Non-directional beacon. The terminal building can handle 100 passengers simultaneously, and the parking apron can accommodate two small fixed-wing and one narrow-body aircraft.
Current Status: After TruJet suspended operations, the airport remained closed for commercial flights until Alliance Air and IndiGo launched services in October 2023. As of April 2024 - March 2025, the airport handled 130,132 passengers and 2,504 aircraft movements. Connectivity to the airport is provided by government-operated buses, cab services, call taxis, and auto-rickshaws, with Salem Junction being the nearest major railhead.
