Chief Petty Officer John William Finn was awarded the first Medal of Honor of World War II for his valor during this attack. Throughout World War II, it served as a major training base in the Pacific Theater. Decommissioned by the Navy in 1949, the U.S. Marine Corps recommissioned the airfield on January 15, 1952, as Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay. Due to its historical significance in World War II, Hangar 1 and five seaplane ramps were designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987. The airfield was officially named Marion E. Carl Field in May 2009. The airport has one asphalt runway (4/22) measuring 7,771 x 200 feet (2,369 x 61 meters). Its scenic location on the Mokapu Peninsula has also led to its use as a filming location for Hollywood movies.

Current Status: Kaneohe Bay MCAS (Marion E. Carl Field) Airport remains an active and operational military airfield. It continuously undergoes modernization to support contemporary aircraft, including helicopters and tiltrotor aircraft.
