Elmendorf Air Force Base (IATA: EDF, ICAO: PAED, FAA LID: EDF) is a United States Air Force (USAF) facility located in Anchorage, Alaska.

Type of Facility and Operations: It is a private-use military facility with an airport traffic control tower that operates 24 hours a day. The base has two asphalt runways: 06/24, which is 10,000 feet long, and 16/34, which is 7,493 feet long.

Notable Features and History: Construction on Elmendorf Field began on June 8, 1940, as a major and permanent military airfield. It was formally designated Fort Richardson on November 12, 1940, with the air facilities named Elmendorf Field in honor of Captain Hugh M. Elmendorf. After World War II, the Air Force assumed control of the original Fort Richardson and renamed it Elmendorf Air Force Base. The base played a vital role as a main air logistics center and staging area during the Aleutian Islands Campaign and subsequent air operations. In 2010, Elmendorf Air Force Base was amalgamated with nearby Fort Richardson to form Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

Current Status: Elmendorf Air Force Base is currently operational. It is home to the Headquarters, Alaskan Air Command (ALCOM), Alaskan NORAD Region (ANR), Eleventh Air Force (11 AF), the 673d Air Base Wing, the 3rd Wing, the 176th Wing, and other tenant units. The 673d Air Base Wing supports over 5,500 joint military and civilian personnel and provides medical care to over 35,000 joint service members, dependents, and veterans throughout Alaska.
