The airport has historical significance as O'Hare Field, originally built in late 1943 by the United States Navy Seabees during World War II. It served as a base for B-24 Liberator heavy bombers of the Seventh Air Force, which attacked Japanese targets in the Marshall Islands. After the war, it was developed into a commercial airport.
