Historically, the airport opened in August 1941 as Fort Sumner Army Auxiliary Airfield #7, serving as a primary glider pilot training facility during World War II. It later became a prisoner of war camp in March 1944. After the war, it was discharged to the War Assets Administration. Pioneer Air Lines and Trans Central Airlines provided commercial service to the airport in the mid-20th century.
Currently, the airport is operational and open to the public, with approximately 10,950 aircraft operations per year, primarily general aviation. It offers services such as hangars and tiedowns, and air ambulance services are available.
