The airport is situated at an elevation of 4,038 feet (1,231 m) above mean sea level and covers an area of 340 acres (140 ha). It features two runways:
- Runway 15/33: 5,201 by 75 feet (1,585 by 23 m) with an asphalt surface, equipped for non-precision instrument approaches.
- Runway 04/22: 2,809 by 150 feet (856 by 46 m) with a turf surface.
Sterling Municipal Airport primarily supports general aviation, including personal and business flights, flight training, aerial inspections, and business/corporate operations. It is also a base for intensive agricultural operations, particularly from March to September, with crop dusting services available. Additionally, the airport features an aerobatics area and hosts competitions and events.
