🇺🇸 Lackland Air Force Base

Lackland Air Force Base (KSKF (SKF)), located in San Antonio, Texas, is a prominent United States Air Force (USAF) installation with a rich history and a critical role in military training.

Type of Facility and Operations: Lackland Air Force Base is an operational USAF installation and is the sole location for enlisted Basic Military Training (BMT) for both the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Space Force. It falls under the jurisdiction of the 802d Mission Support Group, Air Education and Training Command (AETC), and the 502nd Air Base Wing. Beyond BMT, the base houses the 37th Training Wing, which oversees a variety of technical training squadrons, including those for military working dogs and handlers for the entire Department of Defense. Lackland also accommodates significant tenant units such as the 24th Air Force, 67th Network Warfare Wing, and the Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency. Additionally, it serves as one of four U.S. bases for C-5 transport aircraft and hosts fighter and other military transport aircraft.

Notable Features or History: Established in 1941 as part of Kelly Field during World War II, it was initially known as the San Antonio Aviation Cadet Center. The facility was renamed Lackland Army Air Field in 1946 in honor of Brigadier General Frank Lackland, an early military aviator, and officially became Lackland Air Force Base in 1948 following the creation of the U.S. Air Force. Known as the "Gateway to the Air Force," it has processed and trained millions of enlisted personnel. In 2010, Lackland Air Force Base merged with Fort Sam Houston and Randolph Air Force Base to form Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA). Many original World War II-era buildings remain on the base, with some listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The base is also home to the United States Air Force Band of the West. Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center, a major medical facility on the base, had its emergency room shuttered and replaced by an urgent care center on April 4, 2026.

Current Status: Lackland Air Force Base remains operational and a vital component of Joint Base San Antonio. It continues its primary mission as the sole BMT location for the Air and Space Forces. The base is a large military community, comprising over 24,000 active duty members, 10,000 Department of Defense civilians, and 11,000 contractors and family members.
