It is owned and operated by the City of Scottsdale and functions primarily as a general aviation reliever facility, specializing in corporate and private aviation.
The airport features one asphalt runway, designated 3/21, which measures 8,249 feet long by 100 feet wide (2,514 x 30 meters). Scottsdale Airport is recognized as one of the busiest single-runway general aviation airports in the United States, accommodating general aviation, corporate travel, leisure travel, and air taxi services. U.S. Customs service is also available.
Historically, the airport began on June 22, 1942, as Thunderbird Field #2, serving as a basic flight training school for United States Army Air Forces aviation cadets during World War II. Following the war, it was acquired by Arizona State Teachers College, then by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, before being purchased by the City of Scottsdale in 1966.
